Andy Murray to face Alexander Zverev in the Australian Open

Andy Murray will kick off his Australian Open campaign against Alexander Zverev.

World No 2 Murray, a four-time finalist in Melbourne, beat the German in straight sets in the Hopman Cup recently. 

The 28-year-old Scot has been seeded second at this year's event, as he aims for his third Grand Slam title.

Current champion Novak Djokovic, who beat Murray in last year's final, will face up and coming Hyeon Chung, while Roger Federer, who won the last of his four Australian titles in 2010, plays Nikoloz Basilashvili.

However, world No 5 Rafael Nadal has been handed a tough draw in the opening round against fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

Murray is not the only British representation in the men's first round draw, with Aljaz Bedene set to face American Steve Johnson, who is seeded 31st in the tournament, while Kyle Edmund will square off against Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia.

In the women's draw, Great Britain's Johanna Konta has been handed a difficult opening tie against eighth seed and seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, while British No 2 Heather Watson will face Tímea Babos of Hungary.

Defending champion Serena Williams will face Camila Giorgi in the first round as she looks for her seventh Australian Open crown, while Maria Sharapova, who opens against Nao Hibino, was drawn in Williams' quarter.

Britain's No 5 Dan Evans will face America's Bjorn Fratangelo on Saturday for a place in the main draw but James Ward and fellow Brit Naomi Broady both crashed out in qualifying.

Home favourite Lleyton Hewitt, playing his 20th and final Australian Open, will face fellow wildcard and compatriot James Duckworth.

The tournament gets underway on January 18 in Melbourne.
