Naomi Broady booked her place in the second round of the Rogers Cup with a three-set victory over Puerto Rico's Monica Puig in Montreal.
Big-serving Broady lost the first set 6-3 but bounced back strongly, winning the next two 6-4 6-2 to triumph in a contest which lasted for more than two hours.
Next up for the 26-year-old from Stockport is a match against third seed, Garbine Muguruza, of Spain.
However, there was disappointment for fellow Briton Heather Watson, who was beaten 7-5 6-3 by Australia's Samantha Stosur.
"To get through in straight sets, I'm pretty happy," said Stosur, who reached the Rogers Cup final in 2011. "Overall I thought I served pretty well. There weren't a lot of points off my serve where she could dictate off the first shot.
"If I got a good strike, I was in good shape to win those points."
