Highlights of Andy Murray against David Goffin from the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters

Andy Murray stayed on course for a possible final with Novak Djokovic at the Shanghai Masters after a quarter-final win over David Goffin.

The Scot is trying to overhaul Djokovic in the rankings to become world No 1, and he edged closer to a second successive title after reaching the semi-finals with a 6-2 6-2 win over the Belgian.

Murray won last weekend's China Open and continued his dominant form on the hard courts to set up a match with Gilles Simon in the last four.

But Murray's winning scoreline was misleading as he was forced to work for his win over Goffin, extending his unbeaten run to five matches against the world no 12.

There were ominous signs for Goffin when he handed over a break with a double fault, although Murray nearly gave one straight back before he recovered from 15-40 down to open a 5-2 lead in the first set.

Murray soon moved 1-0 up in the match, but Goffin would save six breaks points while clinging onto his serve in a 15-minute game in the early stages of the second set.

Reaction from Murray after his victory over Goffin

The British No 1 then staved off two break points on his own serve to edge 3-2 up, which seemed to finally break Goffin's spirit, and he wilted in his next two service games to allow Murray a comfortable ending to a testing match.
