Kyle Edmund into Brisbane International quarter-finals after Lucas Pouille withdraws

Brit to take on Stan Wawrinka for place in semi-finals

Kyle Edmund progressed to the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International when sixth seed Lucas Pouille retired during their second round clash.

Frenchman Pouille was trailing 6-3 3-1 to the British No 2 when he called time on his day soon after being treated for blisters on his feet.

Edmund, who started the season ranked 45th in the world, will play second seed Stan Wawrinka for a place in the semis after he defeated Viktor Troicki 7-6 6-4.

Third seed Kei Nishikori booked his place in the last eight after coming from a set down to beat qualifier Jared Donaldson 4-6 6-4 6-3.

Elsewhere in Australia, Great Britain's interest in the Hopman Cup came to an early end with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of France.

Britain's team of Dan Evans and Heather Watson needed to win to have any chance of staying alive after losing their opening match 3-0 to Switzerland's Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic.

Watson was beaten 6-4 5-7 6-3 by France's Kristina Mladenovic in Perth, while Richard Gasquet defeated Evans 6-4 6-2.

Gasquet and Mladenovic went on to defeat Evans and Watson 4-3 4-3 in mixed doubles, which is played in the Fast4 format.

Evans and Watson will play one more tie in Group A against Germany on Friday.
