Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka will be missing from Switzerland's Davis Cup first-round tie against USA in February.
With 20 Grand Slam titles between the two Swiss stars, it means the 2014 champions' hopes of making the quarter-finals will be on a knife-edge when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama.
Head coach Severin Luthi will turn to Marco Chiudinelli (world No 128), Henri Laaksonen (135), Adrien Bossel (489) and Antoine Bellier (611) for the tie to be staged from February 3-5.
Neither Federer nor Wawrinka were expected to travel for away ties in the Davis Cup due to the heavy burden of another gruelling season on the ATP Tour.
Jim Courier's USA are able to call on four players ranked from 19-33 in the world and will be spearheaded by big-hitter John Isner.
