Simona Halep says she only has a 50 per cent chance of playing in the French Open because of an ankle injury.

The Romanian, recent winner of the Madrid Open, needed treatment in last week's Italian Open final after going over on her right ankle in the second set as she hit a return from the baseline.

She eventually went down 4-6 7-5 6-1 to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in Rome and scans showed she had sustained a torn ankle ligament.

Halep would be among the favourites for the title because of her recent form and making the final at Roland Garros three years ago.

"Arriving early in Paris for treatment," she said on Instagram along with three photos, one of which shows her receiving ultrasound treatment on her ankle.

"The MRI scan shows a torn ligament from the fall in Roma. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for RG and will do everything possible to be ready.

"Doctors say it's 50/50 at the moment but it's made good improvement since Sunday. Thank you for all of the support the last few weeks. We are remaining very positive."
