Cameron Norrie has qualified for next week's US Open in New York after beating Japan's Go Soeda in two contrasting sets.

The 22-year-old Johannesburg-born player won 6-1 7-6 (7-5) in 88 minutes, after surviving a tense second set.

The world No 226 raced into a 5-0 lead and breezed through the opening set after conceding just six points from his four service games.

However, Soeda, ranked 95 spots above his British opponent, performed better in the second set with the opening eight games all going with serve.

Norrie then broke to lead 5-4 but was unable to serve out for the win, losing the next game to 15.

The contest went into a tie-break, with Norrie sealing victory on his first match point.

His reward for reaching the main draw at Flushing Meadows is a first round clash with Russian Dmitry Tursunov.

But while Norrie successfully made it to the final Grand Slam of the season, there was disappointment for Britons Naomi Broady and Katie Boulter.

Both were beaten in three sets, with Broady losing to American Nicole Gibbs, while Boulter was sent-packing by Ipek Solyu of Turkey.

The 27-year-old Broady lost 6-4 4-6 6-2, while Boulter was beaten 6-7 (7-5) 6-2 6-2.

Boulter, the world No 250, took the opening tie-break on his fourth set point, after moving 6-2 ahead.

But that was as good as it got for the 21-year-old from Leicester who lost the final two sets in only 59 minutes.

Six Brits are in the main singles draw, with Norrie joining Andy Murray, Kyle Edmund, Aljaz Bedene, Johanna Konta and Heather Watson.
