Milos Raonic has withdrawn from the French Open after failing to recover from injury.

The 27-year-old pulled out of the Monte Carlo in April due to a right knee injury but managed to get to the last-16 of Madrid two weeks ago where he was eventually beaten by Denis Shapovalov.

The Canadian tweeted: "It is with a heavy heart that I am withdrawing from Roland Garros. I have many great memories there, but I know I need to continue working hard to put myself in the best position when I step out on the court. Thank you all for your support and see you soon on the grass."

The injury is the latest in a series of frustrating ailments that have disrupted the progress of the former Wimbledon finalist.

Raonic had right hip surgery in 2011, followed by right foot surgery in 2015 and left wrist surgery last year.

The Canadian also struggled with a right leg injury for much of last year, missing a stretch of tournaments including the US Open.

Raonic had fallen from a career-high world No 3 in the ATP rankings to as low as 40 earlier this year, but came into Monte Carlo ranked 22nd after reaching the quarterfinals of the Miami Open and the semi-finals at Indian Wells.
