Cameron Norrie beat Jose Hernandez-Fernandez of the Dominican Republic 7-6 6-1 to reach the second round of the Lyon Open on Monday.
Norrie, ranked 102 in the world, had opened up a 3-1 lead in the first set following an early break, but failed to hold onto his own serve in the seventh game as Hernandez-Fernandez rallied.
Both players continued to struggle on serve in the tie-break, with British No 3 Norrie pushing ahead 4-1 only to then see his opponent edge ahead 5-4.
Norrie, though, then converted two mini-breaks to finally wrap up the opening set in one hour and seven minutes.
The 21-year-old, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, then raced through the second set in just over half-an-hour.
Norrie twice broke Hernandez-Fernandez, the world number 266, to lead 4-1, and did so again to clinch his place in the second round.
The Briton will next take on Germany's Maximilian Marterer after he upset Gael Monfils 2-6 6-4 6-4.
