The world No 10, who was dumped out of the ATP 1000 Masters Series in Monte Carlo by Grigor Dimitrov last week, was handed a wildcard entry into the Romanian clay-court event.
And the Serbian made light work of Colombian Santiago Giraldo in their second round meeting after being broken just once on his way to a 6-3 6-3 success. He will face Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez next.
In the day's other games, unseeded Garcia-Lopez got off to a slow start against Sergiy Stakhovsky, dropping the first set, but quickly recovered to claim a 1-6 6-3 6-4 victory.
Meanwhile, local favourite Victor Hanescu also advanced to the quarter-finals where he will now face 2011 champion Florian Mayer.
Hanescu caused an upset as he beat fourth-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-4 6-3, giving up just a single break point en route.
Mayer was handed a far stiffer examination and needed a tie break to claim the first set before being blown away by Belgium's David Goffin in the second.
But the German recovered his composure to take the decider for a 7-6 (7/2) 1-6 6-3 win.
