Andy Murray was back to his impressive best as he made light work of Gilles Muller to reach the quarter-finals of the Montreal Masters.

Murray, playing for the third day in a row after defeating Tommy Robredo in a clash that was held over until Wednesday afternoon, needed little more than an hour to beat world No 46 Muller 6-3 6-2.

Murray showed some moments of brilliance, lobbing Muller on several occasions during their clash

"Washington was disappointing and it's been a tough couple of long days with rain delays and late finishes, so it was nice to get out here and play a solid match without too much drama," said Murray.

"Getting matches is the most important thing right now, hopefully I can get a few more."

The 2009 and 2010 champion claimed a routine victory in 65 minutes to ease past Muller for the third time this year after wins in Dubai and Queen's Club.

Murray started sluggishly and found himself 0-40 down on serve in the opening game although the Scot battled back to hold as Muller wasted four break points.

Muller could not find a way back into the game as a rampant Murray made light of windy conditions to wrap up the first set inside 31 minutes.

It did not get any better for the Luxembourg left-hander as he dropped his serve without winning a point at the start of the second set and then again in the fifth game to gift Murray a 4-1 lead.

A mid-set lapse from Murray allowed Muller a route back in as he broke straight back, but three double faults from his beleaguered opponent restored the two-break cushion for Murray, who then held to book a last-eight spot against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after the reigning champion beat Bernard Tomic from Australia 7-6 (9-7) 6-3.

He finished with four aces, 20 winners and won 40 points under five shots to motor through in Canada.
