Clijsters retains title, Kaymer confident but bad time in Wayne's world

Good Week

Kim Clijsters
Kim Clijsters was at her very best as she retained her US Open crown with a commanding 6-2 6-1 victory over Russia's Vera Zvonareva at Flushing Meadows. The 27-year-old Belgian loves the Big Apple, and has now won 21 consecutive matches in New York, having triumphed in 2005 and then coming out of retirement last year to win the title again in just the 14th match of her comeback. Clijsters had done all her hard work during a brutal semi-final against Venus Williams, where she came from a set down to beat the American home favourite to a place in the final.
Richie McCaw
Saturday night in Sydney could hardly have gone any better for New Zealand skipper Richie McCaw, who celebrated a landmark appearance for the All Blacks with a try in a thrilling win over arch rivals Australia. McCaw eclipsed Sean Fitzpatrick as New Zealand's most capped Test skipper when leading his side out for the 52nd time, and he celebrated in style with a late 23-22 victory. Two tires late on, one by McCaw, saw the All Blacks inflict a heartbreaking loss on the Wallabies, maintain their 100 percent record in the Tri-Nations and also make it ten wins in a row against their old enemy all in one go - not a bad way to celebrate for McCaw.
Martin Kaymer
German star Martin Kaymer just keeps getting better and better as he claimed the KLM Open in style on his first appearance since taking the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straights. Far from suffering from the fallout of winning a first major, Kaymer was full of confidence following his USPGA title win and used that extra few percent to register a four-shot victory in Holland. Kaymer could not have wished for a better run out ahead of his Ryder Cup debut next month, and the supreme confidence he is now showing as a major champion will make him a tough nut to crack at Celtic Manor.
Arian Foster
What a statement of intent the Houston Texans made on Sunday as they ran right through the Indianapolis Colts, who played in the last Super Bowl, to kick-off their season with a win. Houston have made their name from being a high-flaying passing team, but running back Arian Foster ran for a team record 273 yards and three touchdowns as they showed that this season they can move the ball on the ground too. Normally whipping boys to the Colts, the early win also gives Houston hope that they can finally make the NFL play-offs, and with Foster looking like the next new superstar of the league they stand a good chance of extending their season.

Bad Week

Wayne Rooney
What can you say about Wayne Rooney's week? He's suffered one right out of the Tiger Woods scrapbook after allegations about his private life led to him being left out of a game against his boyhood club Everton. Sir Alex Ferguson hate his players' off-field antics getting in the way of football, but even he felt the need to take Rooney out of the firing line in what would have been a merciless Goodison Park crowd. As it was, Rooney had to sit and watch as Manchester United eased into a 3-1 lead, only to blow it all in stoppage time and having to settle for a point - needless to say it will be a fired up Rooney who runs out against Rangers on Tuesday.
Paul Casey
The shoe was on the other foot for Dustin Johnson at the BMW Championship, as he saw Paul Casey blow a three-shot lead a few holes ahead of him, enabling the American to finally bag a big win. Johnson has experience of blowing his chances in big tournaments such as the US Open and USPGA Championship, but this time it was Englishman Casey who choked with three consecutive bogeys ruining his title chances. After also being omitted from Colin Montgomerie's Ryder Cup team, it caps a rotten time of things lately for Casey, although remarkably he could still pocket over £7 million if he wins the final FedEx Cup play-off event this week in Atlanta.
Pat Richards
Wigan man Richards missed a late, late penalty at the DW Stadium that cost the Warriors a place in the play-off semi-finals, as Leeds Rhinos picked up the win in a pulsating contest. Kevin Sinfield's drop-goal put the Rhinos 27-26 ahead late on after Richards had missed a conversion and a penalty attempt ion the closing stages. Wigan got their final chance right at the death though with a penalty out on the touchline, but the usually reliable Richards could not convert the difficult attempt and sunk to his knees as Leeds went through.
Barcelona
Spanish champions Barcelona suffered a rare humiliating home defeat as they went down 2-0 against newly-promoted Hercules at the Camp Nou. Pep Guardiola's side started well enough, but were surprisingly toothless after Nelson Valdez scrambled the ball home after 26 minutes, and despite having the likes of David Villa, Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta on show, Barca failed to get on the scoresheet. Barca brought on Xavi and Pedro after the break, but Valdez doubled the visitors' lead when he swept home Tiago Gomes' cross and David Trezeguet could and should have made it three late on.
