Rain showers almost derail victory charge

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Horia Tecau won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open, beating Elena Vesnina and Leander Paes 6-3, 5-7, 10-3 in a dramatic final. It was the first Grand Slam victory for both Mattek-Sands and Tecau, with the match decided on a champions tie-break. Paes was looking to complete a notable double having won the men's doubles trophy with Radek Stepanek on Saturday night and appeared to have been handed a helping hand by the elements. He and Vesnina were trailing 2-4 in the third set when light rain forced the closure of the roof at the Rod Laver Arena and when they returned the pair won the next three games en-route to forcing a tie-breaker. However Mattek-Sands and Tecau regained their composure and closed out the victory.
