Wimbledon 2014: Defending champion Andy Murray seeded third for Championships

Defending champion Andy Murray will be seeded third for this year’s Wimbledon Championships, two places higher than his current ATP world ranking.

Murray’s strong recent ranking as a grasscourt player is taken into account by Wimbledon’s seeding system.

That means he is seeded ahead of Stanislas Wawrinka and Roger Federer, despite being ranked below them in the overall listings.

Novak Djokovic is top seed at the All England Club, with Rafael Nadal second, although the Spaniard is the top-ranked player according to the ATP.

Tomas Berdych and David Ferrer are seeded sixth and seventh and, in the absence of Juan Martin del Potro, Canada’s Milos Raonic is seeded eighth, with John Isner, a Wimbledon legend after beating Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the final set of an 11-hour epic in 2010, ninth.

Japan’s Kei Nishikori rounds out the top 10, with the Championships beginning at the All England Club on 23 June.

The women's seedings directly follow world rankings, with five-time champion Serena Williams top of the list.

Australian Open champion Li Na is second, with French Open finalist Simona Halep third and 2012 Wimbledon runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska fourth.

French Open champion Maria Sharapova, a winner at Wimbledon 10 years ago as a teenager, is seeded fifth.
