Roger Federer begins Wimbledon title defence in style against Dusan Lajovic

Wins for Federer, Cilic, and Querrey on the opening day at the All England Club

Roger Federer began the defence of his Wimbledon men's title in sensational style as he swept past Dusan Lajovic to reach the second round on opening Monday.

The top seed stepped out onto Centre Court for his match against Serbian world No 58 Lajovic in a Uniqlo-branded outfit, signalling an end to his long-term association with Nike.

But it was to be a familiar tale as the Swiss star began his quest for a record-extending ninth Wimbledon title in glorious sunshine with a crushing 6-1 6-3 6-4 victory over Lajovic to rally through to a second-round meeting against Lukas Lacko of Serbia or French qualifier Benjamin Bonzi.

Federer, who is the first man in the Open era to play the singles tournament at Wimbledon for a 20th straight year, received a standing ovation after taking his first match point to complete an emphatic job in 79 minutes.

"I felt very good from the start which is nice," Federer said on court. "Felt at home right away. Got the early break in each set and I was able to bring it home."

Third seed and last year's runner-up to Federer, Marin Cilic underlined his title credentials by smacking down 21 aces as he eased into the next round with a comfortable 6-1 6-4 6-4 win over Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka.

Cilic, who won the Wimbledon warm-up event at Queen's Club last month, will face either Australian qualifier Jason Kubler or Guido Pella or Argentina.
