Aljaz Bedene and Cameron Norrie suffer US Open defeats

Aljaz Bedene and Cameron Norrie lost in the opening round of the US Open leaving Kyle Edmund as the only British player left in the singles draws.

British No 3 Bedene was outplayed by his young Russian opponent Andrey Rublev and slid to a 6-1 6-4 6-4 defeat in an hour and 42 minutes.

Rublev, at 19 one of the best young talents in the game and ranked five places below his opponent at 53, was far too consistent and progressed through to a second-round meeting with seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov.

The 28-year-old's defeat was followed by Norrie's exit at the hands of 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta from Spain 6-2 6-4 6-3.

Kyle Edmund defeated American Steve Johnson in his second-round match, leaving him as the only British player left in the singles draws.
