Manchester City are ripping up everything that has gone before in the Premier League, according to Steve Bates of the Sunday People.

The runaway Premier League leaders thrashed last season's runners-up Tottenham 4-1 on Saturday to open up a staggering 14-point lead at the top of the table.

City's emphatic victory extended their record top-flight winning streak to 16 games, and Bates believes the only threat to their title procession is complacency.

"You were left with a feeling by the end of the Tottenham game that this is a team that just rewriting the Premier League rule book, they are ripping up everything that's gone before and playing the most remarkable football," he told the Sunday Supplement.

"It made you question whether the Premier League was so bad that nobody can touch City, or are whether they so good that they are destroying every effort to stop them.

"I've not seen a team yet that has come close to beating them and if a team can't do it in the first half of the season I can't for the life of me see why they would be able to in the second half. The only danger to Manchester City is themselves. Nobody can stop them.

"If you look at the way Pep Guardiola maintains his own hunger you cannot see him letting those standards slip in the dressing room, he's an incredible slave driver in many ways and will not except any kind of dip in form or intensity.

"We are now looking at whether City can win this title before we've ever thought teams could win it before because they are so good.

"They are going to bust through 100 goals and 100 points for sure, there is no ceiling to what they can achieve this season."

Neil Custis of The Sun joined Bates in the Sunday Supplement studio and highlighted the impact City's breath-taking start to the season was having on the chasing pack.

Champions Chelsea and Manchester United both enjoyed midweek victories but City's relentless pursuit of a first title under Guardiola has left the rest of the league bereft of excitement.

"City have struck the right balance, they are physical and energetic," Custis said. "Guardiola has adapted to the Premier League and he's done it well. They are a joy to watch.

"While it's exciting to watch them, it has taken the excitement out of the Premier League.

"I was at the Chelsea v Southampton game where Chelsea got their eighth win in 10, but the place was flat because their defeat at West Ham has finished their season. You cannot afford to have a blip now with this Man City team.

"I was at Old Trafford midweek when United beat Bournemouth, the place was flat, as flat as I've known it for a long time because the title race is over and it's the middle of December.

"City have taken the buzz out of a lot of games now because we know what the end game will be."
