Ambrose to fight for WWE World Title on next week's Smackdown
Wednesday 21 September 2016 17:08, UK
Dean Ambrose pinned John Cena on WWE Smackdown - and will now face AJ Styles for the WWE World Title on next Tuesday's show.
Ambrose and Cena went head-to-head in the blue brand's main event following The Lunatic Fringe's decision to drop Cena with Dirty Deeds after they had beaten Styles and The Miz seven days earlier.
Ambrose and Cena - who were already set to challenge Styles for his championship at No Mercy on October 9 in a Triple Threat - each kicked out of their opponent's finishing move.
But the Cincinnati native came out on top when he countered Cena's attempted Attitude Adjustment and defeated the 15-time world champion with a roll-up pin.
Styles then chose to attack both competitors - flooring Cena with a Phenomenal Forearm and Ambrose with a Pele Kick - before being informed by Smackdown General Manager Daniel Bryan that he would defend his belt against Ambrose in a week's time.
The Georgian was quickly given a taster of what he will encounter next Tuesday when Ambrose - the man he won his strap from at Backlash - flattened him with Dirty Deeds.
Elsewhere on Smackdown, The Miz retained the Intercontinental Championship with a win over Dolph Ziggler, although, much like at Backlash, his victory was shrouded in controversy.
Miz's wife, Maryse, had sprayed Ziggler with an aerosol at the recent Smackdown pay-per-view on September 11 and tried to do the same on Tuesday night.
The referee saw Maryse's misdemeanour and promptly ejected her from ringside - but amid the commotion Miz sprayed Ziggler himself and pinned his challenger.
Baron Corbin saw off Apollo Crews with End of Days before exchanging words with Jack Swagger, while Randy Orton defeated Bray Wyatt's disciple, Erick Rowan, with an RKO.
Plus, Naomi and Nikki Bella beat Natalya and Carmella via disqualification after Carmella repeatedly threw Bella into the barricade.
