The 32-year-old has not played for Arsenal this season after suffering a serious knee injury in pre-season, which required surgery.

The German was Arsene Wenger's first-choice centre-back last season, making 36 appearances, and he has made over 200 in all competitions since his £8m move from Werder Bremen in 2011.

Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker says he's hopeful of returning to action soon

Mertesacker, who has won two FA Cups with the Gunners, began his career at Hannover 96 before a five-year spell at Werder Bremen.
