Shawn Porter is ready to follow the Floyd Mayweather blueprint in a bid to defeat Andre Berto and secure a rematch with Keith Thurman.

Porter (26-2-1-KO16) will return to the ring for the first time since suffering a unanimous points decision loss to Thurman when he takes on Berto (31-4-KO24) at the Barclays Center in New York next Sunday, live on Sky Sports 1HD from 2am.

Mayweather produced a slick performance on his way to claiming a wide points victory over Berto in September 2015 - a fight which proved to be the unbeaten American's last in the professional ranks - and left him with an unblemished 49-0 record.

"Well, watching the fight, I definitely admired, as any fight that Floyd Mayweather's in, his boxing ability, but that was something that was very effective against Andre Berto," Porter said.

"So, we'll definitely pick our spots where we want to box; where we want to use the ring. But at any rate, through the entire fight, we will control the action as well as the ring."

Porter returns to New York less than 10 months after failing in his quest to dethrone WBA world welterweight champion Thurman and become a two-time world champion.

Despite being focused on the task in hand, the 29-year-old admitted a rematch against Thurman remains firmly on the agenda.

"I think finally being able to beat him, would be something on my résumé, in my legacy, that would be remembered for a very long time," Porter said.

"He's a very good fighter, a very good defender of his belt/belts, and I'm looking forward to fighting him in a rematch."
