Ricardo Mayorga and Shane Mosley clashed at a press conference after the Nicaraguan appeared to slap his opponent's girlfriend on the behind.
Mosley, 43, reacted angrily to the incident and lunged at the 41-year-old Mayorga - causing a brief melee ahead of Saturday's rematch in Inglewood, California.
The American beat Mayorga in their first bout in September 2008 when he scored a dramatic final-round knockdown - and he has promised more pain for his fellow former world champion.
In an interview broadcast by TMZ, he said: "I can't wait. I'm going to kill him. I'm going to get in that ring and really just beat him down. I'll walk straight towards him and start throwing punches."
Mayorga said afterwards: "With all due respect, I did it to get in her boyfriend's head because he's clearly very upset."
Mosley's girlfriend offered to pay $10,000 to let her throw punches at Mayorga, who responded by saying: "I'll give her $25,000 to let me slap her again."
The bout between the pair is the latest in a spate of clashes involving veterans, with the likes of James Toney, Antonio Tarver and Roy Jones Jr all in action of late.
