Surrey bowler Andre Nel is set to undergo surgery after injuring his elbow on a doorframe.
The South Africa international hit his elbow while carrying a heavy bag, but the injury was not initially believed to be serious.
However, after suffering discomfort when he played against Leicestershire, he had a scan that revealed a complete rupture to the lateral collateral ligament and the common extensor tendon at the humeral attachment.
Surrey cricket manager Chris Adams said: "This is obviously very disappointing for the team and for Andre personally.
"It's an injury that needs to be dealt with quickly. Otherwise, it could have long-term ramifications.
"Andre has played a huge part in our season so far, on and off the field, so I'm looking forward to having him back at the earliest opportunity."
