South Africa batsman joins county as interim overseas player

Lancashire have signed South Africa batsman Ashwell Prince as their interim 2010 overseas player. The 32-year-old, who will feature for the Proteas in the fourth and final Test against England in Johannesburg on Thursday, will play for the county until Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara arrives following his international commitments. Prince played for Lancashire at the beginning of last season in place of VVS Laxman and appeared in six first-class matches, averaging 52.60 batting at number three during his seven-week stay. And Prince revealed he was eager to renew his association at the Old Trafford club. "When Lancashire asked me if I would be interested in returning this season, I didn't hesitate in saying yes," he said. "It's a great club, with excellent facilities and I really enjoyed the camaraderie of the dressing room and the warm reception I received from the supporters." Lancashire cricket director Mike Watkinson added: "We are fortunate that a world-class batsman like Ashwell is available for the start of the season. "During his short stay with us last year, he delivered the goods with some outstanding performances and I know he is determined to pick up where he left off. "April and May is jam-packed with Championship cricket and it is important we get off to the strongest start possible if we hope to achieve our goals."
