Australia captain Steve Smith will return home from the team's tour of India with a right shoulder injury.

Smith landed awkwardly on his shoulder during the final one-day international with India in Nagpur and had a MRI scan following training on Thursday.

He was only able to train for 20 minutes in the nets on Friday before he was forced to stop and Cricket Australia have now confirmed his tour has come to an end.

Australia lost their five-match ODI series against India 4-1 and begin the first of three Twenty20 matches on Saturday in Ranchi, live on Sky Sports.

The injury should not affect Smith's chances of playing in this winter's Ashes series with England, and Cricket Australia medical staff are expecting him to be fit again before the end of the month.

Team doctor Richard Saw told Cricket Australia: "He has had an MRI scan which has excluded serious injury, but we believe the best course of action is for him to not continue to aggravate his shoulder and allow it to recover.

"He will have further investigation upon his return to Australia but we remain confident he will be available for the start of the Sheffield Shield season."
