County Championship team of the week: Joe Root in after 213

History-making Brett D'Oliveira makes our XI

County cricket's finest put in some stellar performances during the latest round of Specsavers County Championship matches - principally on a sun-baked opening two days.

But which players did enough to make our team of the week? The three double centurions were easy picks, while a Somerset favourite is also in…

Brett D'Oliveira - Worcestershire

Brett D'Oliveira, Worcestershire

We didn't have to look too far for our opening batters, with two of them notching double centuries. D'Oliveira was the first, compiling 202 not out against Glamorgan, just a week after scoring his maiden County Championship century against Essex. The 24-year-old's twin ton also created a slice of history - with Brett's father Damian and grandad Basil also hitting first-class double hundreds, the D'Oliveiras are now the first son, dad and grandad combo to complete the feat.

Ed Joyce - Sussex

The veteran Irishman also flourished at the top of the order - but would have been dismissed for 47, not his highest first-class total of 250, had Derbyshire's Hamish Rutherford not displayed butterfingers at cover. The New Zealander's fielding error saw Joyce pass 100 for the 43rd time in first-class cricket, go on to best his previous highest total of 231, and take his boundary tally to 34 fours and two sixes before he was trapped lbw from the 327th ball of his innings.

Luke Procter - Lancashire

Luke Procter, Lancashire

Procter impressed with bat and ball for Lancashire as they made light work of Hampshire at Emirates Old Trafford. First, the 27-year-old ousted Hampshire's low-scoring top scorers Adam Wheater (32) and Will Smith (18) while taking 3-14 in 8.3 overs as the hosts skittled their visitors for 109. Then, he notched his highest first-class score of 137 as Lancashire responded with 456, the Oldham-born star playing a gem of an innings before he ran into an inspired Tino Best.

Joe Root - Yorkshire

Joe Root

One of the first names on the England team sheet in all formats, Root slots onto our XI following his 213 during Yorkshire's run-fest against Surrey at Headingley. On his home ground, which he will return to with his national side for the first Test against Sri Lanka from May 19, Root hit 22 fours and a six in a class 242-ball knock, with his only frustration perhaps that he was dismissed 13 runs shy of his highest-first class score of 236, achieved against Derbyshire in 2013. Root wasn't done, though - dismissing Kumar Sangakkara and Stephen Davies with his spin!

Jonny Bairstow - Yorkshire

Jonny Bairstow, Yorkshire, County Championship

Root found a superb ally against Surrey in the form of England team-mate Bairstow. The latter played the aggressor in a 372-run fourth-wicket stand with Root, walloping 198 from 230 balls before he clipped his 231st to Sangakkara. Bairstow's demise saw him fall narrowly short of a second double century at Headingley this season - the belligerent right-hander struck 246 versus Hampshire - and he will be targeting another biggie at the same venue against Sri Lanka.

Sam Northeast - Kent

Sam Northeast. Kent. 2013.

The Kent captain looked poised to become the fourth double centurion of the week but had to settle for a score of 189 after having his stumps rearranged by Gloucestershire's Josh Shaw. Still, a career-best is not to be scoffed at, while Northeast's runs helped Kent dig themselves out of a big hole. The Canterbury side were 6-2 when he headed to the crease having lost Daniel Bell-Drummond and Joe Denly for ducks. The score was 376-5 when he returned to the hutch.

Peter Trego - Somerset

Peter Trego, Somerset

Most of the Warwickshire and Somerset batsmen found scoring runs pretty tricky at Edgbaston this week - but Trego didn't. The 34-year-old hit a first-innings 94, adding 110 for the second wicket with the game's only centurion Tom Abell (104), before notching 51 in Somerset's following knock. Trego also picked up the wicket of Ian Bell and would add consistent medium pace to hard-hitting batting if this XI took to the field.

Toby Roland-Jones - Middlesex

Toby Roland-Jones

Roland-Jones is rarely mentioned when it comes to possible England pacemen but perhaps his five-for for Middlesex against Nottinghamshire will push him up the pecking order. Roland-Jones removed four of Notts' top six, including bowling Alex Hales and having top scorer Samit Patel caught out, en route to his 13th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, the right-armer relegating Steven Finn to support act.

Lewis Hatchett - Sussex

Lewis Hatchett of Sussex in action during a friendly match between Sussex and Hampshire

Before Joyce's runs punished Derbyshire, the Midlanders fell victim to a Hatchett job. Sussex seamer Lewis snared 5-58 at The 3aaa County Ground, with key home batsmen Chesney Hughes (8), Wayne Madsen (9) and Wes Durston (8) among his scalps. Not bad for a bowler playing in his opening Championship match of the season. Hatchett just pips Hampshire's 34-year-old West Indian seamer Best, who took five wickets at Emirates Old Trafford to prove he has lost none of his venom.

James Anderson - Lancashire

The exploits of Yorkshire's Root and Bairstow will have delighted the England hierarchy and Anderson's form across the Pennines will have given them a boost, too. The swing-bowling supremo took three wickets in Hampshire's innings and managed the same again in their second as The Red Rose County secured an innings victory. We'll overlook his batting, though, with the 'Burnley Lara' having his stumps smashed first ball by Best!

Simon Kerrigan - Lancashire

Simon Kerrigan of Lancashire celebrates after dismissing Tom Abell of Somerset during Day Three of the Specsavers County

We stay in the north-west for our front-line spinner. Having had to make do with a watching brief in Hampshire's first innings, Kerrigan made up for lost time in their second as he took five wickets on the final day to help Lancashire seal their crushing win. The left-arm spinner took the important wicket of Wheater, who had frustrated the Red Rose for a time on the final day, before running through the lower-order to record figures of 5-59.
