PCB chief insists Pakistan can still host the 2011 World Cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board has called on the ICC not to take any "hasty decisions" on the 2011 World Cup. Pakistan is supposed to co-host the event with India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in two years time - however that has been thrown into doubt following the terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team and match officials in Lahore. Several members of the Sri Lankan squad were injured and eight people were killed when gunman attacked the convoy heading to the Gaddafi Stadium for the second Test. Match referee Chris Broad and umpires Simon Taufel and Steve Davis have been very vocal in their criticisms of the security they received at the time. However PCB chairman Ijaz Butt insists the country can still host the tournament - but should be given time to address certain issues. "It would be too unjust to doubt Pakistan's ability to host the 2011 World Cup in the wake of terrorists attack on the Sri Lankan team," Butt said. "I have taken up the matter with the ICC and would also request the international cricket community not to make hasty decisions and wait for a year at least to judge Pakistan's credentials as a host of international matches. "What happened on Tuesday came as shock to the PCB and the whole nation. We would do all we can to save the future by making the international cricketing community realise Pakistan's eagerness to host international cricketing events." Pakistan lost the Champions Trophy last September due to safety and security concerns - while several teams have refused to tour the country.
