Former England and Gloucestershire off-spinner David Allen has died

Former England and Gloucestershire off-spinner David Allen has died at the age of 78.

Bristol-born Allen played 39 Tests for England in the 1960s, taking 122 wickets at an average of 30.97 with four five-wicket hauls.

He also scored 918 runs for his country with five half-centuries and a top score of 88.

At county level, Allen played for Gloucestershire between 1953 and 1972 and finished his career with more than 9,000 runs and 1,200 wickets in first-class cricket.

Allen was elected as Gloucestershire's club president in 2011.

A statement on www.gloscricket.co.uk read: "Gloucestershire County Cricket Club is saddened to announce the death of former player and club president David Allen at the age of 78.

"Our sincere sympathy goes out to his family and friends."
