New England head coach Trevor Bayliss is backing England to regain the urn if they perform to their potential

New England coach Trevor Bayliss is backing his team to regain the Ashes urn if they can perform to their potential.

The Australian expects Alastair Cook to be the dominant voice in the home dressing-room and banish memories of the 5-0 Ashes whitewash in 2013/14.

Ahead of the first Test at Cardiff's SWALEC Stadium, Bayliss told Sky Sports Ashes: "I'm not going to say 'this is the way you must do something' because that may be completely out of his character.

"Over a period of time hopefully we can work together and we can see the benefits of doing things in certain ways.

"I don't want to change things straight away with him because a lot of it will be bred by the type of players, or the way players underneath him, the way they play.

"I mean the players you've got are playing well so if the boys are playing well then generally the captain's job is a little easier. The captain has to set an example and lead the way."

England won the last home Ashes 3-0, while there have been signs of a recent Test revival for the team in the drawn series with New Zealand.

More from The Ashes 2015

Bayliss was only appointed England head coach in late May after Peter Moores was sacked following a poor World Cup and inconsistent Caribbean Test series.

Bayliss said: "There's obviously some talented players in that line-up and if we can go out and reproduce that there's no reason why we can't win this Ashes series."
