Kent batsman Sean Dickson was given out for a duck for handling the ball

Kent batsman Sean Dickson wrote himself into first-class cricket history on Sunday after becoming the 62nd player to be dismissed 'handled the ball'.

Dickson, playing in just his 14th first-class game, was sent on his way after swatting away Leicestershire seamer Ben Raine's delivery, which was rolling back towards his stumps having jumped over his foot.

While permitted to kick the ball away or even hit the ball away with his bat, Dickson's instincts saw him reach down and swipe it away, breaking Law 33.

After a moment of 'what happened there?', Leicestershire wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien led the appeal and the umpires, following a short consultation, had no option but send Dickson to the changing rooms without scoring - the 24-year-old was the fifth batsman to be given out in this way in the County Championship and just the second since 1965.

The previous player to suffer the fate was Derbyshire's Indian overseas player Cheteshwar Pujara, also against Leicestershire, in 2014, when he defended a short delivery from Atif Sheikh and, with the ball dipping towards his stumps, batted it away with his glove.

Charles Wright (Nottinghamshire v Gloucestershire, 1893), Khalid Ibadulla (Warwickshire v Hampshire, 1963), and Alan Rees (Glamorgan v Middlesex, 1965) complete the unfortunate five in the County Championship.

Even some of the biggest names in cricket have been dismissed in this fashion - probably most famously Graham Gooch in an Ashes Test match in 1993 at Old Trafford.

Already with 133 to his name (the only batsman to have scored a century and be dismissed handled the ball), he faced up to Merv Hughes' short-pitched delivery and as the ball dropped behind him, he punched it away. Umpire Dickie Bird raised the finger.

Another to go was Michael Vaughan, in a Test match in Bangalore against India in 2001. On 64 at the time, his attempted sweep from Sarandeep Singh saw the ball trickle between his legs, Vaughan grabbing it before it slid towards his stumps.

Australia skipper Steve Waugh, West Indian great Desmond Haynes, Pakistan opener Mohsin Khan and another Australian, Andrew Hilditch, along with South African Russell Endean in 1957, have all been dismissed that way in a Test match.

So, who was the first?  Playing for the MCC against Kent at Lord's in 1857, right-handed batsman James Grundy was sent on his way for just 15 as the Law covering handling the ball has been in the book since its original inception in 1744.

The old handled-ball law!

"If ye Striker touches or takes up ye Ball before she is lain quite still, unless asked by ye Bowler or Wicket Keeper, it's out."

Back then, the Law was worded "If ye Striker touches or takes up ye Ball before she is lain quite still, unless asked by ye Bowler or Wicket Keeper, it's out."

Dickson is the sixth batsman in this decade to write his name in the history books, joining Pujara, Canterbury's Will Williams, Evan Lewis of Trinidad and Tobago, Imraan Khan of South African side Dolphins and Keddy Lesporis of Windward Islands.

Welcome to the list, Sean!
