England v Pakistan: Who is surprise inclusion Toby Roland-Jones?

With James Anderson ruled out of the first Test against Pakistan at Lord's next week, England have turned to Middlesex seamer Toby Roland-Jones.

The uncapped paceman is one of five seam options in the 12-man squad, joining Stuart Broad, Steven Finn, Chris Woakes and Jake Ball. But who is he and how did he force his way into Trevor Bayliss' thoughts? Here's what you need to know…

Full name: Tobias Skelton Roland-Jones
Age: 28
Born: Ashford, Middlesex

Why is he in the squad?

Roland-Jones has been in superb form this summer and showed what he is capable of just this week, taking 3-34 as Middlesex skittled county champions Yorkshire for 167 to record an unlikely win. That came after he had picked up another three wickets in the first innings and smashed 79 not out to help set up the victory.

In total, he has taken 30 first class wickets, at 29.03, this season and averages 53.33 with the bat - albeit that figure is boosted by three not out scores in his six innings.

Is he just a flash in the pan?

Absolutely not. This is Roland-Jones' seventh season in county cricket and he has taken his 278 first class wickets at just 25.17. Indeed, only once in that time has his average for the season crept above 30 and the seamer still picked up 43 wickets that year.

Roland-Jones' best season to date came back in 2012 when he claimed 64 scalps at just 19.45, taking four five-wicket hauls. As he has proven this season, he is also a decent lower-order batsman with a first class average of 22.96, as well as one century and six fifties to his name.

Is he new to the England setup?

It is the 28-year-old's first call-up to the England Test side but the Middlesex man was part of the Lions squad that took on Pakistan A in a five-match one-day series in the UAE over the winter. Roland-Jones picked up four wickets in the series with an economy rate of 4.19, the best of the Lions bowlers.

What do they say about him?

England captain Alastair Cook: "Toby has had a really good summer so far and has been there or thereabouts for the last three years or so. His bowling stats have improved a lot and he is a very decent bowler and it will be good to see him around the squad for the first time this week."

Sky Sports' David Lloyd: "A lad who caught the eye was Toby Roland-Jones, he had a good solid action - very, very similar to Jake Ball and both of them bowl with good discipline."

ECB national selector James Whitaker: "With an injury to James Anderson, there is an opportunity for Toby Roland-Jones who has been a consistent performer in the County Championship over the last few years and deserves his chance."

What does he have to say?

Roland-Jones on his England call-up: "I didn't have it on my radar in the slightest, to be honest. It's always nice when you're in good form and performing well for your county but, without sounding too clichéd, I didn't have it on my mind. It was an amazing surprise to have, something I'll never forget."
