Alastair Cook matched Sir Don Bradman's tally of 29 Test hundreds on day one of England's second Test against Pakistan at Emirates Old Trafford.

Cook notched 105 in Manchester after winning the toss and electing to bat, the opener striking 15 boundaries before he was bowled by Mohammad Amir on the stroke of tea.

The England skipper - whose first Test ton on home soil also came against Pakistan, Cook amassing 105 at Lord's in 2006 - was not the only centurion during the opening skirmishes at Old Trafford.

Joe Root (141no) completed his 10th Test ton and first against Pakistan, the Yorkshireman steering England to 314-4 by stumps with Chris Woakes (2no) the other unbeaten batsman.

Ben Stokes and James Anderson returned to the England side as expected, the duo replacing Steve Finn and Jake Ball in the XI that lost the first Test at Lord's by 75 runs.

However, the hosts resisted any urge to select Adil Rashid as a second spin option, leaving Moeen Ali as their sole tweaker and Pakistan's Yasir Shah as the only frontline leg-spinner on display.
