After all the hype in the weeks leading up to the Ashes, day one of the first Test did not disappoint. Here's all you need to know...

REPORT

England were pegged back after fifties from James Vince and Mark Stoneman on day one of the first Ashes Test, closing on 196-4 in Brisbane.

Story of day one

WHAT THEY SAID

James Vince, England batsman: "It was nice to get some runs early. The conditions were perhaps a bit different to what we expected. There wasn't a huge amount of pace in the wicket at the start of the day but it came onto the bat a bit better as the day went on. They bowled really well and didn't give us a huge amount.

"It's disappointing obviously [not get a hundred]. Whatever score a batter gets they always want more. It would have been nice to have been there at the end of the day but stuff like that happens in cricket."

Pat Cummins, Australia seamer: "It wasn't an overall plan to [Joe Root] but in terms of a fast bowler's wicket it's pretty much the dream wicket. It's one of the most satisfying wickets I've ever got.

"If the ball's swinging to set him up with a couple of overs of outswingers and then try and bowl one big inswinger. It probably only comes off one in a hundred times but when it does it's a pretty special wicket. Fortunately, it was their captain so I couldn't be happier with that."

Rob Key, Sky Sports pundit: "It's honours even because tomorrow in that first session, if England go on and Moeen Ali and Dawid Malan keep going then it's England's day today because the hard work has been done. But a couple of quick wickets throw it back to Australia and they'll be ahead."
