Northants coach says Monty is a match-winner

Northamptonshire head coach David Capel believes that Monty Panesar can still be an England match-winner. More questions have arisen over the spinner after his performance in the second innings of England's first Test defeat to India. Even though the deteriorating pitch was expected to aid his bowling, Panesar could only manage figures of 0-105 as India recorded a memorable victory. His recent struggles in the series against Sri Lanka and now India have placed the 26-year-old under increased scrutiny.

Preparation

Capel, Panesar's county boss, thinks that his preparation has not been ideal following the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. "He needs time to work on his variations in first-class cricket," Capel said. "It's not quite as easy when you're touring with the England team, with fewer first-class matches between Tests, if any, and we haven't seen him much at Northants over the past few years. "But he was one of the fastest players ever to take 100 wickets and he's won Tests for England in the past and he'll do it again in the future."
