Surrey release left-hander following below-par campaign

Surrey have released former England batsman Usman Afzaal following a disappointing season for the club. The announcement will not surprise Surrey supporters as the 33-year-old has not featured in a first-class match for the county since the end of July. Afzaal, who played for England in three Ashes Tests in 2001, joined Surrey from Northamptonshire at the end of the 2007 season but has struggled during a difficult season for the Brown Caps. He averages just 25 in 11 matches this term - posting three half-centuries and failing to register three figures. Surrey's managing director Gus Mackay praised Afzaal for all he's given the club over the last three seasons and wished him luck in finding a new county. "I would like to thank Usman for his contribution to the club during his time here and wish him all the best for the future," he said.
