Nick Gubbins reflects on a second consecutive century for the South in their defeat to the North whose coach Paul Collingwood is 'delighted' to see the series go to a decider

Nick Gubbins hit a second consecutive ton to give England selectors a timely reminder of his talents as the South lost to the North.

The Middlesex opener struck 109 from 89 balls as the South, winners of the first of three 50-over matches on Sunday, were bowled out for 289 in reply to the North's 335 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

The 24-year-old's century came just hours before England were bowled out for 58 on the first day of the first Test against New Zealand - their sixth lowest Test total.

Gubbins, who hit 116 in the first match and has been involved with the England Lions this year, told Sky Sports News: "I've been feeling pretty good.

"In the one-day series against the West Indies, one thing I was probably critical of is that I wasn't going on.

"I was getting good starts so it's nice to go on in these games but it was just infuriating that today wasn't the one to lead the boys over."

The North's win saw Worcestershire's Brett D'Oliveira top score after 79 off 83 balls with Lancashire leg-spinner Matt Parkinson taking three wickets in a 46-run win which takes the series to a decider on Friday.

North squad coach Paul Collingwood told Sky Sports News: "I'm delighted for the boys. They've put a lot of hard work and effort into the series so far so to get their first win for the North side in the last two years is great.

"Gubbins has been in great form in this series so far and it took something special to get him out.

"I think we've proven we can beat them. There's a lot of belief in the dressing room and there's actually quite a lot of competitive edge in the series.

"The guys are desperate to win so we go to Three Ws Oval [Barbados] - we've had a warm-up game there so we know the wicket out there and hopefully that'll give us a slight advantage."
