England seamer Mark Wood was among the bowlers to cash in as 17 wickets fell on day one of Durham's Specsavers County Championship Division One clash with Somerset at Taunton.

Somerset chose to bat first but were dismissed for 184, as Chris Rushworth (3-47) and Wood (3-24) shared six wickets.

However, the Durham batsmen also struggled and the visitors limped to 154-7 at stumps, Jack Leach (3-61) and Roelof van der Merwe (3-47) doing the damage.

The day began with Somerset openers Tom Abell (0) and Marcus Trescothick (six) falling cheaply before captain Chris Rogers (30) and James Hildreth (34) added 55 for the third wicket.

But Rogers then fell to Paul Coughlin (2-48), before three wickets went for just five runs, as Wood dismissed Hildreth and Van der Merwe (0).

That made it 82-6 but Craig Overton (42) and Ryan Davies (31) saved the day, producing some big hits during a 51-run eighth-wicket stand.

Wood is back in the Durham side after ankle surgery and the England selectors will have been pleased to see him bowling at a good pace.

Durham's reply began serenely, Mark Stoneman hitting 35 of the opening pair's 38-run partnership before he was caught off Leach.

Having reached 58-1, the visitors then lost their way as Van der Merwe removed Scott Borthwick (16), Keaton Jennings (14) and Stuart Poynter (seven).

However, Durham did recover somewhat thanks to Coughlin (30) and Adam Hickey (25 not out).

Jason Roy made his first championship century of the season at Lord's as Surrey played well to reach 384-8 on day one of their clash with leaders Middlesex.

The hosts are chasing a first title for more than two decades but their London rivals are fighting the drop and put up stern opposition.

They were led by in-form England limited overs opener Roy who came in number five and made his first Lord's ton, surviving a scare on 95 when he was put down at mid-wicket by a diving Dawid Malan.

Roy's last four innings, across seven days and three different formats, have been 120 not out, 93 not out, 0 and now 110.

He added 118 for the fourth wicket with opener Rory Burns (88) as Surrey recovered from 23-2, Tim Murtagh (2-85) having made early inroads.

Burns missed out on a ton and sank to his haunches in despair when he smashed a James Harris delivery into the hands of George Bailey on the deep point boundary.

But, with Aaron Finch (37), Steven Davies (38) and Ben Foakes (53 not out) also chipping in as well, Surrey are within sight of passing 400 for only the fourth time this season.

Australian Travis Head top scored with 54 on his Championship debut to help Yorkshire to 252-9 on the first day of their match with Warwickshire at Headingley.

Ryan Sidebottom (11 not out) returned for Yorkshire for the first time since April and he helped the cause, adding an unbroken 48 for the last wicket with Steven Patterson (35 not out).

Jack Brooks was also back for the hosts after recovering from an abdominal strain, while leg-spinner Adil Rashid was also included following his release by England. But there was no place in the side for either Liam Plunkett or David Willey.

Despite Head's efforts, Yorkshire were in some trouble at 130-5 when Rashid (6) fell to Jeetan Patel (2-55) but Jack Leaning (42) and Tim Bresnan (28) added 60 for the sixth wicket.

Leaning was eventually caught in the slips off Keith Barker, who was very impressive and finished the day with figures of 4-55.

Yorkshire then slipped to 204-9 but the last-wicket pair salvaged the situation, getting the biggest cheer of the day when they secured a second batting point just before the close.

Stand-in Hampshire captain Will Smith finished the day unbeaten on 99 as Division One's bottom team enjoyed a good first day against Lancashire at the Ageas Bowl, closing on 276-1.

Smith, who is in charge while James Vince is on England duty, eclipsed his previous best score of 67 this season and needs only a single in the morning for his first century of the campaign.

The Hampshire skipper chose to bat after winning the toss and put on 191 for the first wicket with Jimmy Adams, who scored 88, his best Championship score of the season.

Adams missed out on a century when he hit Jordan Clark straight to Steven Croft at point but Tom Alsop arrived at the crease and played nicely to reach 50 not out at stumps.

Smith will have to wait until the morning to complete the 17th hundred of his first-class career, having enjoyed a let-off on 70 when he was dropped by Tom Smith at second slip.
