Hampshire have signed South Africa all-rounder Ryan McLaren to replace overseas player Jackson Bird for the final month of the season.

The 32-year-old is likely to make his debut for the county in their clash with Durham on September 1 with Bird heading back to Australia at the end of August.

Pace bowler Bird will return home after the meeting with Warwickshire to prepare for the domestic season with Tasmania.

McLaren has plenty of experience of English conditions after previous spells in county cricket with Kent and Middlesex, and he has represented his country in two Tests. 54 one-day internationals and 12 Twenty20 games.

He has scored more than 8,000 runs in all forms of the game, with a top score in first-class cricket of 140, as well as taking nearly 800 wickets.

Hampshire's director of cricket Giles White said: “We are delighted to have an all-rounder of Ryan's quality taking over from Jackson for what will be an important end to the season.
