Haseeb Hameed missed out on a first Specsavers County Championship ton of the season on a rain-affected day three of Lancashire's top-of-the-table clash against Essex at Old Trafford.

The opener, who scored 88 from 250 balls, was one of five victims for PCA Player of the Month for August, Jamie Porter (5-73), as Lancashire scored 290 in their first innings, thanks partly to a 57-run stand for the 10th wicket between Tom Bailey (34no) and Kyle Jarvis (26).

Lancashire, 36 points behind league leaders Essex then reduced the visitors to 115-4 before a heavy downpour prevented any play after tea.

Somerset seem poised to beat Warwickshire in the bottom-of-the-table encounter at Edgbaston after Jonathan Trott's side stumbled to 172-6 chasing 402 for just their second win of the campaign.

Marcus Trescothick earlier completed his 51st first-class century for Somerset and 65th in total, scoring an unbeaten 119 as the away side, 12 points above basement boys Warwickshire, declared on 265-4, James Hildreth (68) and Tom Abell (51) also bagging fifties.

Ryan Sidebottom, meanwhile, took 3-49 for Yorkshire as they reduced Middlesex to 108-3 at Headingley, having dragged their first-innings score up to 358 thanks to Tim Bresnan (44) and Liam Plunkett (34).

Hampshire's lower-order also came to the fore as they moved from their overnight 129-7 to 290 all out against Surrey, Gareth Berg (80) adding 93 runs with Kyle Abbott (37no) for the ninth wicket.
