The most exciting finish to a County Championship season for years is in prospect after the penultimate round of fixtures left the title race delicately poised.

Middlesex are chasing a first title for 23 years and are nine points clear at the top of the table, although they had to settle for a draw from their fixture with Lancashire at Old Trafford this week, after an impressive fightback from the hosts.

But Yorkshire are hunting a third title in succession and can leapfrog the Londoners if they prevail at Lord's next week.

However, Yorkshire's hopes met with a setback this week, as they lost by 10 wickets to Somerset at Headingley.

Third-placed Somerset are chasing a first title in their history and are now just a point behind Yorkshire following their impressive Headingley win.

They will fancy their chances of defeating bottom side Notts at Taunton next week, and could finish the season top of the table if things go their way at Lord's.

However, there is no doubt that the showdown between the top two is the first order of business, and cricket lovers can enjoy the blockbuster encounter live on Sky Sports, starting next Tuesday.
