Hodgson goes straight into their squad for the LV= County Championship Division Two clash with Worcestershire on Sunday.
The 24-year-old is likely to start behind the stumps with Derbyshire's squad lacking regular glovemen Tom Poynton (injury) and Richard Johnson (illness).
Hodgson played 17 limited-overs matches for Yorkshire last season and has made 11 first-class appearances for a combination of Yorkshire, Leeds/Bradford MCCU and Zimbabwe franchise the Mountaineers.
Last season's highlights were an unbeaten Twenty20 half-century against Leicestershire and 90 off 98 balls against Glamorgan in the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition.
Derbyshire's elite performance director Graeme Welch said: "Dan is a good young player. There's stiff competition for places up there at Yorkshire, but he was still a regular for them in one-day cricket last season.
"Now he's got a chance to stake a claim in first-class cricket by playing well for Derbyshire.
"I'm grateful to Martyn Moxon and Jason Gillespie for sanctioning it. Hopefully they'll gain some benefit too with Dan returning a better cricketer.
"We're looking forward to welcoming Tom Poynton and Richard Johnson back into the fold as soon as possible. In the meantime I'm sure Dan will do a terrific job."
