Kumar Sangakkara completed his 101st career century and became the first player to 1,000 runs in the Specsavers County Championship this season on day two of Surrey's day-night clash at Yorkshire.

Sangakkara, who hit his 100th hundred in all formats against Yorkshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup earlier this month, reached three figures from 136 deliveries, before a rapid acceleration ensured he had raced on to 180 off 183 balls when Surrey declared on 516-7.

The Sri Lankan's sixth Championship ton of the campaign, which featured 21 fours and four sixes, backed up the efforts of Rory Burns (90) and Jason Roy (87) on day one, while he was ably supported by Tom Curran (44) during a seventh-wicket stand of 158 at Headingley.

Joe Root then got his first look at the pink ball ahead of England's day-night Test against West Indies in August, scoring 12 not out as Yorkshire closed on 27-1 following further heavy rain.

Alastair Cook, Root's predecessor as England Test captain, was unable to add to his overnight 64 with heavy rain preventing any play on day two at Chelmsford, where Essex are 106-0 in reply to Middlesex's 246 all out.

Rain also dominated in Southampton with only 13 overs possible between Hampshire and Somerset, during which time Marcus Trescothick (13) chopped on as the visitors closed on 43-1 to trail by 168.

Andrew Umeed scored a painstaking 103 from 339 balls as bottom-side Warwickshire closed on 259-7, just 14 runs shy of Lancashire's 273.

Umeed, 21, put on an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 75 with Jeetan Patel - who had survived a hat-trick delivery from Tom Bailey - and 74 for the second with Jonathan Trott (56).

James Anderson caught Sam Hain off his own bowling, adding to his wicket of William Porterfield on Monday night, while Warwickshire keeper-batsman Tim Ambrose passed 10,000 career first-class runs.

In Division Two, Mark Wood boosted his claims for an England Test place by taking 5-34 as Durham dismissed Worcestershire for 367, Brett D'Oliveira scoring 122 and Moeen Ali 58 before rain caused an early finish.

Nottinghamshire's Steven Mullaney (168) posted his best-first class score against Kent at Trent Bridge, sharing a 222-run stand with Alex Hales (85) for the fourth wicket as Notts made 371 to lead by 191 on first innings.

Harry Gurney then seized two wickets as Kent finished on 105-4 - Sam Billings notching an unbeaten 39 - but there was a scare for Notts and, potentially England, as seamer Jake Ball left the field after tweaking his leg.

Sixteen-year-old Afghan-born spinner Hamidullah Qadri, the first player born in the 2000s to play in the County Championship, took his maiden Derbyshire wicket as Glamorgan were dismissed for 237.

Tony Palladino ended with 4-36 before heading into bat as night-watchman as Derbyshire reached 2-0 from two overs, a lead of 53.

Lewis Hill and on-loan Surrey seamer Matthew Pillans added 60 for the ninth wicket as Leicestershire clawed their way from 86-8 to 157 all out against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

Northants' Ben Duckett then failed to back-up his first-innings 112 by falling for a two-ball duck, the home team reaching 60-3 by the close.

Wet weather wiped out day two at Hove, though, where Gloucestershire are 31-0 in reply to Sussex's Luke Wright-inspired 358-9 declared.
