Northamptonshire defeated LV= County Championship Division Two rivals Kent by an innings and 23 runs with almost a day-and-a-half to spare at Canterbury.

The hosts were dismissed for 208 after losing nine wickets in under two sessions to gift a 23-point win to Northants.

Resuming on 90 for one at the start of Thursday's play, Kent lost four wickets in the morning session.

Joe Denly (33) started the rot with a meek clip off his hip straight into the hands of Josh Cobb at short mid-wicket.

Skipper Sam Northeast (six) was pinned leg before when playing across a ball from Azharullah, as was Ben Harmison, who was out with a near identical stroke against Ben Sanderson.

Veteran Rob Key was dismissed on 42 when a miscued pull against Sanderson (4-44) was caught by Azharullah to make it 121-5.

The capitulation gathered pace after lunch when Darren Stevens was adjudged leg before for 15 to Olly Stone.

Stone then cleaned up Calum Haggett with the next delivery for a golden duck and although James Tredwell survived the hat-trick ball, the end for Kent was nigh.

Azharullah (3-68) had Tredwell caught at long leg as was top-scorer Sam Billings (43) leaving Chambers to polish off the win by rearranging the stumps of Kent's last man Matt Hunn.

Elsewhere, half centuries from Jacques Rudolph and Andrew Salter rescued Glamorgan from trouble on the first day of their LV= County Championship Division Two encounter against Gloucestershire at Swansea.

Glamorgan choose to bat after winning the toss but were soon in dire straits on 41 for three as Gloucestershire's opening bowlers David Payne and Liam Norwell accounted for three of their top four inside the first 14 overs.

But Rudolph gave some respectability to Glamorgan's score with a knock of 68 before number nine Salter ensured their tail wagged with an unbeaten 73 as they reached 271-8 at the close.

Norwell finished with 3-71 for the day while Payne took two wickets at a cost of 63 runs.
