Sussex extended their advantage over Essex on day two of their County Championship Division Two clash at Hove.

The home side managed to add only five runs to their overnight score before being dismissed for 360, Jamie Porter (2-83) taking two wickets in two balls to leave himself on a hat-trick for his first ball in Sussex's second innings.

In reply, Essex reached 252-7, Tom Westley (85) and Jesse Ryder (51) providing the only real resistance in putting on 83 for the fifth wicket before both fell within three overs of each other.

Earlier, England's Alastair Cook fell for one to Steve Magoffin (2-34) in the third over, and Ravi Bopara was dismissed for 17 by 19-year-old left-armer George Carton.

Will Madsen hit 150 for Derbyshire as they amassed 444 in their first innings against Gloucestershire in Bristol.
