Joe Root and Alastair Cook fall for ducks in the County Championship

Joe Root was out for a golden duck in his first Specsavers County Championship game of the season as Yorkshire were skittled for 50 by Essex on a 22-wicket day at Chelmsford.

England Test captain Root edged his first ball from Essex paceman Sam Cook (5-29) to Alastair Cook at first slip as Yorkshire subsided in 18.4 overs after electing to bat to record their lowest score since 1973. SCORECARD

Alastair Cook was also dismissed for nought, snicking the sixth delivery he faced behind to England team-mate Jonny Bairstow, as Essex slipped to 142 all out in reply, with Dan Lawrence (48) top-scoring.

Bairstow opened the batting in Yorkshire's second innings, hitting a rapid 50 prior to being bowled by Peter Siddle from the 44th ball he faced as the Tykes closed a crazy day on 161-2 to lead the defending champions by 69 - Harry Brook unbeaten on 57 and Cheteshwar Pujara 22 not out.

Bairstow had been bowled by Sam Cook for seven in the visitors' first dig, with Gary Ballance (22) the only batsman to make double figures and Essex's Australian seamer Siddle bagging 4-7 from his 3.4 overs.

James Anderson - despite sporting a startling silver haircut - was upstaged by former England team-mate Marcus Trescothick (100) and George Bartlett (110) as Somerset reached 321-5 at Lancashire. SCORECARD

Trescothick twisted his ankle on 95, called for a runner and was then caught behind a ball after completing his 66th first-class ton from 137 deliveries, before hobbling off the field to a standing ovation - scans later revealed the 42-year-old had suffered a broken metatarsal in his right foot.

Bartlett, 20, notched his maiden century from 189 balls, having recorded a top score of 39 from his previous five Championship appearances.

Anderson bowled 19 wicketless overs in his first game of the summer, but there was joy for England new-ball partner Stuart Broad, who snared two scalps for Nottinghamshire against Hampshire. SCORECARD

Broad ousted Jimmy Adams and Joe Weatherley, while Luke Fletcher removed James Vince (5) as Hampshire slumped to 23-3 in reply to Notts' 302 before Hashim Amla (27) and Rilee Rossouw (24) lifted them to 70-3.

Fidel Edwards had earlier taken 4-84 for Hampshire, with Samit Patel (73) and Riki Wessels (54) scoring half-centuries and Broad chipping in with 33 for Nottinghamshire.

Anderson and Broad's England colleague Mark Stoneman was run out for 28 in Surrey's home fixture with Worcestershire at the Oval - Surrey skipper Rory Burns (137no) anchored his side to 278-4, with Ben Foakes (72) hitting his third fifty in five innings. SCORECARD

In Division Two, Glamorgan collapsed from 57-0 at lunch to 94 all out before tea against Kent at Sophia Gardens Cardiff as Darren Stevens (6-26), in the week he turned 42, and Matt Henry (4-31) ran amok. SCORECARD

Glamorgan then reduced Kent to 163-9 by the close with Dutch paceman Timm van der Gugten (6-40) matching Stevens by taking six wickets, his scalps including Stevens and Joe Denly (43).

Ollie Robinson snared 7-58 for Sussex against Middlesex at Hove, including England's Dawid Malan lbw for 13, as the visitors were dismissed for 230, despite Max Holden (84no) hitting a fourth first-class fifty. SCORECARD

Tim Murtagh and James Harris then claimed two wickets apiece as Sussex closed on 60-4, Harris bowling Luke Wright (9) with a beauty.

Leicestershire hit 301-4 on day one at Durham with openers Michael Carberry (73) and Paul Horton (75) putting on 146 for the first wicket and Mark Cosgrove compiling an unbeaten 66. SCORECARD

Derbyshire struggled to shift Warwickshire night-watchman Chris Wright (72) at Edgbaston as the Bears responded to their visitors' 318 all out with 375-6 by stumps on day two.

Jonathan Trott (76) was one of four batsmen to pass fifty, a day after he announced he would retire at the end of the season, as Warwickshire moved into a 57-run lead in Birmingham. SCORECARD
