Ben Duckett: Northants star pushing for Test debut in Bangladesh

Ben Duckett: Pressing for a Test place

He impressed in the recent ODI series, scored double hundreds for fun in 2016 and is now pushing to make his Test debut after a further two half-centuries in England's warm-up games - but who is Ben Duckett?

Last month Duckett also became the first player in the 47-year history of the PCA to claim both the Players' Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards, following a remarkable 2016 season where he scored 2,706 runs across all formats.

A standout knock was the 220 he scored off 131 balls - including 29 fours and six maximums - for England Lions in July, and it wasn't even his highest score of the season.

So, what more do we know about this England Test hopeful?

Full name: Ben Matthew Duckett
Age: 21
Born: Farnborough, Kent
Twitter: @BenDuckett1

How many runs has he scored?

The 21-year-old Duckett has amassed 2,706 runs across all three formats of the game, averaging 58.17 in first class games, 43.36 in T20s, and 63.28 in List A cricket.

The left-hander also smashed Sri Lanka 'A' all around the park to record the highest-ever total by an England Lions player with that 220 in July - the Northants star and Kent's Daniel Bell-Drummond sharing an unbeaten stand of 367, the second highest List A partnership of all-time.

In fact, his double century for the Lions was not even his highest score of the season, Duckett hit 282 not out, the sixth highest score in Northants' history, against Sussex in the County Championship back in April.

And England have taken notice?

Yes. After making his England Lions debut against Pakistan 'A' earlier in the year, easing himself in with what looks, in comparison to those double hundreds, a rather tame knock of 163 not out, Duckett has since shown he can cut it with senior side, hitting two half-centuries during the ODI series in Bangladesh.

Whether he can cut it at that Test remains to be seen, but the signs are promising given that Duckett has certainly made his mark with not only the Lions, but also with the England Under-19s side a few years back.

Just months after being dropped from the squad after failing a fitness test, the wicketkeeper-batsman was back in the side for the 2014 U19 World Cup and joined none other than England captain Alastair Cook as one of only two Englishmen to average over 60 in the history of the tournament.

Plenty of pedigree there then…

Absolutely and it has not gone unnoticed with Sky Sports pundit Rob Key tipping him to make a big impression earlier this season, saying: "I think Ben Duckett at Northants is an outstanding prospect, certainly in the longer format.

"He really puts you under the cosh and can score very quickly, so can easily come off in T20, too. What sort of role they will find for him at Northants I don't know, but he could be a real star."
