Uncapped James Vince and Jake Ball are in England's 12-man squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka

Hampshire captain Vince has international experience in limited-overs cricket, and his inclusion was widely expected after James Taylor's sudden retirement left a space in the batting order.

England batsman Joe Root is sure James Vince and Jake Ball will make an impact in Test cricket

England play three Tests, five ODIs and one T20 against Sri Lanka before taking on Pakistan across all three formats, and the ECB has named a 30-man performance squad for the summer.

Director of England cricket Andrew Strauss said: "This is the first time in two seasons we have selected an England Performance Squad. I feel that it is important that we do so to enable our staff to monitor effectively those players who are on our radar, but not necessarily part of one of the England teams.
