Dawid Malan has told Sky Sports News HQ he thought his chance of England honours had gone before this month's call-up.
The Middlesex batsman was "speechless" when his name was included in the squad for this week's Twenty20 international series against South Africa.
Malan failed to make the side following a first call-up last year and assumed his opportunity of a full cap had passed.
He said: "It's always a great honour, and I hope I can get a chance this time.
"It was fantastic to get the news. It's hard to describe the feeling you get when you get a call you're not expecting saying you're part of an international squad.
"My ambition, my dream is to play for England. So I hope I can get the cap this time.
"I definitely thought I'd missed the boat - being involved, not playing, and then not being involved in anything after that."
England take on South Africa at the Ageas Bowl on Wednesday before the series moves on to Taunton on Friday and Cardiff on Sunday.
