Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Wade have been left out of Australia’s one-day international squad to play England.

Chief selector Trevor Hohns said ODI specialist Maxwell was omitted over consistency concerns, while Tim Paine takes the wicketkeeping gloves from Wade following his outstanding form in the Ashes Test series.

Travis Head, Chris Lynn, Mitch Marsh and Marcus Stoinis were the middle-order options preferred ahead of Maxwell, who has scored 2,035 runs at an average of 32.30 in his ODI career but averaged only 22 in his past 20 ODIs.

"We need more than that from a player in the side's batting engine room," said Hohns. "Glenn is still absolutely in our thoughts but for this series we have decided to look again at Chris Lynn.

"He has been one of the most feared players at domestic level and we want to see if he can convert that domestic form to the international stage."

Australia captain Steve Smith added: "It's unlucky on Glenn. Looking at the way he trains, he could train a bit smarter.

"If he keeps switched on, trains well, focuses on basics more than expansive things, it will help him have consistency.

"We've seen the way he can play - he can do all his funky stuff and be pretty cool with that - but when he puts head down, he's a really good batsman. If he's doing that, you want him in the team."
