Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting demonstrates drills that enabled him perfect his game

Ahead of the third ODI between England and Australia, Ricky Ponting joined Ian Ward to demonstrate a few batting drills that helped him during his career.

The former Aussie skipper spoke about the primary focus of his drills being balance, ensuring he was well set at the crease.

With that in mind, the on-drive was the shot Ponting most frequently used. One tip he offered for a right-hander was to try and watch the ball and line it up with your right eye to avoid over-balancing.

Ponting has moved into coaching since retiring and was in charge of Delhi Daredevils during the most recent IPL and highlighted some differences in the way the new generation of batsmen train, largely due to the amount of T20 cricket they play.

"That's what they're practising: power," he said. "They're actually practising hitting the ball as hard and as far as they can."

To do that balance is again key with many now adapting some close to a baseball-style stance with the bat up and hands high, allowing a freer and faster swing through the ball, and minimal foot movement.
