Joe Root has backed fellow batsman Ian Bell to bounce back from a poor run of form in the third Ashes Test, which begins at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

Warwickshire player Bell and Root have been moved up the batting order to third and fourth, respectively, after Gary Ballance lost his place in the side.

Root also struggled for runs in the second Test defeat at Lord’s, managing just one and 17 from his two innings despite a hugely impressive 12 months.

But Root remains confident he and the other England batsmen will prove their worth in Birmingham.

"I think every international player is playing for their place at all times," said Root.

"Ian's record is fantastic, and he's playing at his home ground.

Sky Sports commentator Ricky Ponting believes that Joe Root should be moved up to number three in England's batting order.

"Last time the Ashes were in England he was outstanding, and I'm sure he will want to put a marker down and get form that he will stay in for the rest of the season."

Root also agrees with Bell’s assertion they must continue to play attacking cricket rather than go on the defensive.

"The top order just has to go out and play its own game," he added.

"It's not gone to plan so far but we've got some really talented players out there.

“It's about making sure we do everything we can to build big partnerships and put them back under pressure.

"We know how we felt at Lord's, and we want to put that back on Australia."

Like his skipper, Alastair Cook, Root does not know why their Test form has been so patchy this year.

Inconsistent

Having secured Test victories against West Indies, New Zealand and Australia this year, they then lost to Australia by 405 runs at Lord’s.

Despite that blip, the Yorkshireman insists they will bounce straight back at Edgbaston.

"It's hard to put my finger on it, we're just not as consistent as we'd like to be,” said Root.

"It's not through lack of effort. We've got a few young players finding their feet, and it will come with time.

"Throughout this summer, we've always come back from heavy defeats well.

"There's so much confidence in the camp, and we'll be looking to put them back on the back foot on Wednesday."
